Canon Printer Tips – Will unchipped cartridges work in cannon printers?

my printer is a pixma ip4500

Best Answer: Smedrik is correct. If you have bought unchipped ones (OEM’S) you have to transfer the chip from the original one and re-set it with a chip re-setter. You may be better of buying compatibles that are chipped. Some Canons will work without a new chip and just not show ink levels, but even then you have to have a chip on the cartridge or it will not work.

This site sells both chipped and unchipped and explains about chip transfering.

This site sells a full set of chipped ones for £14.99 plus 99p postage – which is just about £3 each. I have never bought from them so I can’t verify how good they are.

I have a Canon printer I have bought just 2 original cartridges since I had it last year. I can’t tell the differnce between the none OEM
print outs and the originals. What I can see a difference in is my bank balance!

  • They work —–For a time
I do a lot of photo printing & purchased a bulk order of compatible ink
(5each colour) for my pixma 5000
Result the following week had to buy new printer(pixma 4600)
Still usable for B/W text work but ptoto`s are no go
Single colour cast over photo ,done deep clean works for time then different colour cast
Cheapest “genuine” set of 5 inks ==£41.00 which is half cost of new printer Total rip off
  • These days if you shop around you can get a new Canon printer with cartridges for the price of Canon branded replacement cartridges.
  • No – they will not.

With an unchipped cartridge you need to reset the chip on your old cartridge and affix that chip to the new cartirdge.

  • It’ll work… but not for long time…. buy original if possible.
