Review of Office Depot(R) Model 20 (BC-01 BC-02 BX-2) Black Ink Compatible Refill

February 12th, 2010 No comments

Office Depot(R) Model 20 (BC-01 BC-02 BX-2) Black Ink Compatible RefillI bought this refill kit for my oldest printer, the Canon which takes BC-02 cartridges. My thought was that it would be environmentally friendly and inexpensive. The price was right, and it arrived quickly from Office Depot. But, it’s messy, and the ink is difficult to get off (ie., from fingers). Also, the print quality was good, but there were some incomplete areas which required additional cleaning to improve.Lastly, there probably is less to throw away overall; but, the ink holder, the tools and the box itself likely add up to as much waste as the original cartridge. So, next time I plan to buy a remanufactured cartridge and recycle my used one (at Staples for a credit).
(P.S.The ink clogged and stopped working about 1 month after I used this product.I would not buy this again.)

Review of Ilford Premium Pearl 4 x 6 Inch Photo Paper 50 Sheets

February 11th, 2010 No comments

Ilford Premium Pearl 4 x 6 Inch Photo Paper 50 SheetsI bought this paper last year and have had great success with it.It compares well with Ilford’s Classic Pearl as well as Epson’s and Lumijet’s pearl offerings.Though Ilford does not produce ICC profiles for Printasia stock (hence the lower price), there are any number of companies which will profile your paper for $30-$100+.The weight is nice.It has a pleasing warm color, average contrast. If you like a high contrast paper, look elsewhere. For my $, Premium Pearl (and Gloss) offers good color, solid tonal range and sufficient heft.

Review of Value Pack BCI-3e Black, Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow Cartridges – Sold by Geoinkonline

February 11th, 2010 No comments

Value Pack BCI-3e Black, Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow Cartridges - Sold by GeoinkonlineI bought this MIPO value pak in July, but did not need to install it until now, September ‘07.Previously, I have always purchased genuine Canon ink, but this time I could not resist the low price, along with with the ISO 9001 certification of quality MIPO claims. From outward appearances the MIPO cartridges are virtually identical to Canon’s, right down to the look and feel, including the packaging.Terrific.I decided to insert all four of the cartridges today. The installation instructions are identical to Canon’s, remove the plastic covering, twist-off the orange plastic level to open the ink outlet, and insert the cartridge into the printer. All was going well until it was time to twist-off the lever from the magenta cartridge. The amount of force required was more than it should have been.Apparently the lever had been glued-on with too much adhesive. When the lever did break-off it took the nearby corner of the cartridge with it, opening the cartridge and spilling ink onto my hands, etc.Quite a mess. However, the other 3 colors were successfully installed.Because there was still a little magenta left in the old Canon cartridge I have been able to successfully use the printer; the new ink seems to be performing O.K.One final comment. The MIPO package says to contact their customer service if not completed satisfied with their product, but they do not provide an address, phone number or web site, so I do not know if I will be able to contact them regarding this product failure.

2-1-08 follow-up:I found the MIPO website with a Google search. The site provided an email address for customer contact so I emailed them and explained the above, hoping to get a replacement cartridge for the one that broke. They never responded, so I’ve given-up on them.Neither they nor their products should be trusted. My earlier, slightly optimistic appraisal of their ink has changed. After some use I’ve found that the the ink is terrible.I don’t know how they can claim it’s the same formulation as Canon ink, it’s a far cry from that. After printing, the paper used has a strong ink odor; smells like a solvent of some kind. Now the colors have gone bad.The only color that seems to be reasonably OK is the black, and even that looks a little washed-out and tends to bleed into the paper.I hope this ink hasn’t permanently damaged my printer.A big lesson learned.Stay away from this ink.I tried to reduce my recommendation from 2 stars to one (zero starts is not a choice) but the Amazon webpage for this follow-up would not allow it.

Review of Genuine NEW Brother LC41HYBK High Yield Black Ink Cartridge

February 11th, 2010 No comments

Genuine NEW Brother LC41HYBK High Yield Black Ink Cartridgealthough I did as one reviewer suggested and clipped the tab and it works now. The color is brilliant. No problems at all.

The reason I bought this is because I did once buy high yield black ink for my MFC-420CN, so I think the manufacturer did at one time allow this cartridge to work with the MFC-420CN. Maybe that’s the reason some reviewers say it works and some don’t.

If you bought this by mistake, do as the previous reviewer recommended and clip the tab. I may buy another one of these just to save some money.

Product Description
Genuine brand new Brother LC-41HYBK high yield black ink cartridge compatible with FAX-1840C/1940CN/2440C and MFC-3240C/3340CN/5440CN/5840CN printers.
