Review of Canon i9100 Photo Printer

January 23rd, 2010 No comments

Canon i9100 Photo PrinterI picked up this printer to print 11×17 and the occasional 13×19 photo. I’ve owned a Canon back in 1997, but have been using Epson printers since. Now I’m switching back to Canon for good. This printer is flat out amazing. The print quality is fantastic, as is the design and quality feel of the actual product.

The materials and colors are nice, and not cheap and loud like Epson printers. My other Epson is a photo 820 which was only [$$] but a fortune for ink, and Epson never did finish the drivers for Mac OSX. It was advertised that it could do borderless printing, but it would only do it in OS9 which nobody uses anymore. The Canon prints borderless 13×19 prints in OSX and they’re brilliant. Epson’s are nice printers, and I think they had the edge for a few years but Canon has clearly caught up. I’m surprised how fast and quiet this printer is, but I guess that’s what you get for [$$]. It’s worth it though.

I am a graphic designer with a meticulous eye for detail — trust me, this is a good product.

Review of Canon ImageCLASS MF8170c Color Laser Multifunction

January 17th, 2010 No comments

Canon ImageCLASS MF8170c Color Laser MultifunctionThe Canon MF8170c is the very first AIO (All-In-One) fax-scan-copy-printer to feature color laser printing at its pricepoint and without the 500 lb bulk of a standalone copier/printer.While you can probably both save money and increase quality and speed with separate units doing the same task, after buying my first AIO HP OfficeJet G85 several years ago I was hooked and promised myself never to go back to the copy-by-scan-and-print method. The color print speed, noise, and lack of certain features are worth knocking a star off, but if you can afford it and don’t need certain higher-end features its well worth it for home office use.

The MF8170c is a heavy (ships at 106 lbs – 2-day shipping on this would pay for an Amazon Prime membership!), big (25″ x 20″ x 20″), relatively complicated looking unit but is a relative pussycat to get going by USB – just install drivers from the CD.Ethernet connections weren’t as easy; it and my Netgear WGR614 router didn’t like each other at first, but once I figured the problem was the printer didn’t have an IP address, the installation software let me solve that problem and I was off and running.

B&W print quality is in general quite crisp, color print quality very good and both well above that of the HP 4650n I used at my prior job. This is not a photo printer, however; I found using both copy and glossy paper my G85 substantially outperformed it even when the MF8170c was set in photo mode.Fax and copy functionality and quality were ok, although it feels like my old G85 had more features.Where this lacks is in scanning.Scan quality is actually pretty good, but you can’t scan through the network and have to have a USB connection (and drivers).Annoying.

Where I knock a star off (and would probably knock a second off if it weren’t a unique item) is three fold.First, no power switch means even in energy saver mode this has fans going; it’s not hugely loud (compared to my late lamented airplane-engine-sounding 15-year-old Epson ActionLaser II) but it’s annoying and takes forever to turn off and warm up.Second, for a 2005 printer color prints like its 2000 at a rated 4 ppm after a 1 minute warmup. This isn’t surprising given Canon quietly skimped on RAM.The printer has only a measly 24MB, a fact convieniently omitted from the available technical specifications and one I only found out about by looking around on the web browser based internal monitor. Finally, I really don’t like the fact that I can’t buy a duplex (dual-sided) printing collator, although the design makes me hope there should be some accessories coming out shortly.

If you have more than 2-3 people who need to do routine color printing or scanning this isn’t your machine.I’d pick up one of the networked color laser Lexmarks and a good monochrome AIO unit instead. However, for home office use this is state of the art.I like its large bulk in the corner of my home office even with its limitations.

Review of Canon PC150 Personal Copier

January 13th, 2010 No comments

Canon PC150 Personal CopierThis printer is wonderful.I haven’t one negative remark concerning the functionality of the machine.I am warning about this purchase because to replace the cartridge is $85 upwards. Obviously, half the price of the “copier” is the”cartridge enclosed.”

Product Description
For nearly 20 years the Canon Persoal Copier series has been serving Home and Small Business users with the need for a simple copier that requires virtually no maintenance – and is affordable. The PC150 is an example of this situation. While multifunction inkjet printers or fax machines may have copy modes, nothing comes close to the sharpness and detail of the Canon personal copier.

Review of Canon Comp. BCI-1421PC – PIGMENT PHOTO ( 8371A001AA )

January 5th, 2010 No comments

Canon Comp. BCI-1421PC - PIGMENT PHOTO ( 8371A001AA )This ink is much more photo cyan than the yellow or magenta. (or, some products just don’t need reviewing…..)

Product Description
Canon has poured all the Know How of its extraordinary history of developing innovative office machines into each of its copiers, printers, and networked office systems. The same superiority of design and manufacture goes into all of the Canon-branded consumable imaging supplies and parts for this equipment. Naturally, no one makes better parts and supplies for Canon products than Canon. Using genuine Canon parts and supplies is your best insurance against equipment damage, and possibly voiding your equipment warranty.

Review of Canon PIXMA MP800R Office All-In-One

January 2nd, 2010 No comments

Canon PIXMA MP800R Office All-In-OneI recently purchased my Canon MP800R and so far I am quite happy with it. It took about 15 minutes to set up and configure my workstation and it was all very very simple.

The printing is what i’ve come to expect from Canon – perfect! No lines.. No paper jams like I enjoyed on a daily basis with my HP. Everything just works and works well. This thing is really fast. 30 PPM (2 seconds!) for Black and White photos and 24 PPM for color and they come out great. I haven’t seen it really advertised anywhere but the printer does have duplexing built in right out of the box. The borderless printing and 9600 x 2400 dpidetail make my photos look absolutely amazing.

My main motivation for purchasing this unit was the networking capabilities. I had an old HP all-in-one but it required that it be hooked up to a computer that had to always be on in order to act as the print host, and there was no way to share the scanning capabilities. All these problems are gone thanks to this unit. Now, since my computers are all networked, I just load the Canon software on each machine and I am printing and scanning in no time. No need for a dedicated machine, and no confusing mappings. The software searches the network and finds it for me, and hooks me up. While I haven’t tried it yet, it also supports wireless and bluetooth connectivity as well.

The scanning portion of the unit is really the only place where I can see a need for some improvement, but it still is very good. When it scans it automatically crops and aligns the photos for you. I can’t tell you how many times in the past I scanned something with my HP and I had to then crop it, and it was never straight so i’d have to rotate the photo in Photoshop or something and it just a big pain. With this I don’t have to do any of that. Where it can stand some improvement is with the speed. It takes quite a while to scan something, even at the low and medium resolutions as compared to other units I have tried. Perhaps it is slow because it is doing so much to improve the scan quality. It also doesn’t have a document feeder so you can’t scan multiple documents at once.

All in all I am very happy with this purchase. I’ve had many all-in-one systems over the years and Canon now has a new fan.
